World Disabled Day is observed every year on 3 December. Also known as “International Day of Persons with Disabilities”, the day aims to promote an awareness of disability issues and the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities.
It is important to integrate disabled persons in the main stream of society. Disabled persons are often discriminated against and that is never an ideal condition. Society must take adequate steps to involve persons with disabilities in the main stream of each aspect of the social, political, economic and cultural status of their communities.
To showcase the talents of the differently abled persons among the masses, Department of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disability, Govt. of Odisha organized State Level Para sports meet for persons with disabilities today at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar.
Mr. Ashok Panda, Hon’ble Minister of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Public Enterprises, Science and Technology, Govt. Of Odisha inaugurated the Sports meet in the presence of Mr Bhaskar Jyoti Sharma, Secretary, Department of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disability, Govt. of Odisha, Smt Bratati Harichandan, Director, Department of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disability were present on this occasion.
Apart from the play and game the Sports meet witnessed a splendid dance performance by a group of deaf persons following the vibration of music. Another Blind group from outside Odisha performed music.
More than 1500 differently abled students from all over Odisha participated in this final round of para sports meet. They were selected from the district level competitions like Tricycle race, Short foot throw, Chess, Music Chair, Wheel Chair race and hit throw etc, held in 30 districts recently.
The closing ceremony was graced by Mr. Asit Tripathy, Hon’ble Chief Secretary, Govt of Odisha as Chief Guest. He distributed the prizes to the winners.
